Cloth Nappies - Yes You Can! (part 2)

Part 1

The brand of cloth nappies I went with was Baby Beehinds. They use materials such as hemp and bamboo which are very absorbent. Fabric is so much kinder and softer on baby’s bottom than disposables, which are made from paper and plastic. I found when my babies were exclusively breastfeeding there would always be pooy leaks if they were in disposables. This was never the case with cloth.

My cloth nappies also came in the one handy adjustable size and indeed they fit both my newborns, and I am still using them now on my 2½ year old with no trouble at all. The nappy covers are made from PUL, a lightweight breathable polyester material, so is less likely to cause rashes as with regular plastic pants. Some brands also make an all-in-one nappy where there is no separate cover but is simply incorporated into the nappy itself.

Reusable fleece liners can be placed inside the nappy which makes disposing of solid material really easy. After changing a cloth nappy I just place them both in a nappy bucket and ensure the lid is tightly closed. This is called dry-pailing - no need to soak! I also happen to use reusable cloth wipes and these I throw in the nappy bin as well. When I’m ready to wash a load I do the lot with half the amount of detergent I would in a regular load and line dry.

Personally I use cloth nappies for home and short trips out. Disposables are terrific for nappy changes when out, though a lot of parents choose to use cloth nappies full-time. They have found it just as easy to carry cloth in a nappy bag as you would disposables and say their daycare centres are also happy to oblige.

Unfortunately it is very difficult to find these products in stores to see them for yourself. The best list of stockists I've found is here.
